The Melbourne International Jazz Festival is honoured to present the Australian premiere of the remarkable Sangam, a trio featuring the transcendent musical gifts of revered American jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd with Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain and drummer Eric Harland. Charles Lloyd formed the group in 2004 in honour of his lifelong friend, drummer Billy Higgins. Sangam’s powerful performances quickly became something of legend. More than entertainment, the group presents the powerful uncorrupted expression of beauty through music. This exclusive performance features Zakir Hussain in his only Australian appearance. Hussain is today appreciated in the music world as an international phenomenon.  A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, his consistently brilliant performances have not only established him as a national treasure in his own country, India, but gained him worldwide acclaim. Together with the masterful young drummer Eric Harland, Lloyd and Hussain will weave a musical experience that profoundly touches the spirit.

2010 MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL CELEBRATES THE COMMON CHORD!

Experience the Common Chord of music from 1 to 8 May 2010, when the Melbourne International Jazz Festival comes to town. A huge multi-layered program featuring more than 400 performers from across the globe will be presented in more than 95 events in the city centre, incorporating film, visual art, public art installations and forums. For absolutely all lovers of music, this is a time to be entertained, to discover, to be inspired and most importantly to participate.

Highlights include jazz legend Ahmad Jamal, US saxophonist Charles Lloyd with Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain; father of Ethio jazz Mulatu Astatke; West African guitar virtuoso Lionel Loueke; an all-star tribute to the great jazz standards, Baby It’s Cold Outside! featuring Clare Bowditch, Lior and many more; Chicago post-rock pioneers Tortoise; plus masterclasses, club sessions, public installations and much more! It all kicks off with The Big Jam when all of Melbourne comes together for a joyous experience of mass-music making, led by Australia’s much-loved trumpeter James Morrison on Saturday 1 May.

The Surrey Park Football Club will this year be hosting a football league aimed at Melbourne’s Indian students. The idea behind the concept is to provide a comfortable environment for Indians to learn about Australia’s indigenous game, to help introduce them to Australian culture and as a means for them to meet new people (both Indians and Australians). Conversely we also hope the club’s Australian players and the greater community will learn more about Indian culture too. This league is both EFL and AFL endorsed (Nick Hatzoglou and Josh Vanderloo).

Two information sessions will be held in the coming weeks for those interested:
Saturday 20 March @ 10am
Wednesday 24 March @ 7.30pm

Both sessions will be at the Surrey Park club rooms; Cnr Elgar and Canterbury Roads, SURREY HILLS.

INDIAN MEET

La Trobe University is a home to students from all over the world. Not only the studies but also its natural ambience and multicultural outlook give it edge over others. Students leave their homes and come here with a positive attitude. In order to take this to next step a social gathering was held in the name of ‘Meet n Greet’ on 6th August 2009.

The event was marked by overwhelming volunteering and participation by students and witnessed a large turnout for the evening. The event was hosted by La Trobe University Indian Students Club (LTU ISC) President, Mr. Abhishek Awasthi, who is currently pursuing a Master of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics course. The event started with a small speech by Mr. Murli Thandani who stated about multi cultural integrity and socially active life of students in La Trobe. Then there were series of games like breaking the ice, quizzes in which people were divided into groups on the basis of the month they are born. This enhanced the quest among attending students and allowed them to interact more with people around them. The enthusiasm was clearly visible on the faces as the event turned over from its one part to another and so on. There were also small speeches by ex students who clarified doubts & misconceptions about student life and made them realize the importance & essence of being a ‘La Trobe student’. Many students came forward with their queries regarding living in Melbourne and coping here away from their families and country. Their questions were answered with sheer pleasure.

To add to the zeal there were dance performances, a duet by Deepti and Shahid and a solo by Aparna Chauhan. A comedy play by Tanu and Varun spiced the evening and enjoyed all the cultural performances. The dances made the atmosphere more vibrant. There were voluntary performances too which made the triumph many folds sweeter. The spicy Indian food at the end made it even more wonderful. Plenty of gifts like calling cards, movie tickets, USB sticks, food vouchers, etc. added cheer to the student faces as they got so many things beyond their expectations.

People got to know each other and made lots of friends. They made a mini India away from India and felt like home. All the faces were so pleased and happy. The aim of the event was happily achieved. Thank you La Trobe and thank you LTU ISC.
